Question: Isn't income tax illegal unless voluntary?

I am canadian and this is a candian economy based question. Correct me if im wrong but wasn't income tax implemented to aid the troops during the war? well if this is true then why are we still paying this tax? I also thought it was illegal for the federal government to charge income tax since it is provincial territory? I also thought that income tax was purely voluntary.. when did these things change and who gave the go ahead on this?

Question: What does "100% tax income deduction" mean? 10 pts?

-does it mean exemption from all taxes?
found in this sentence: Restoration of the 100% income tax deduction for drugs and medical expenses paid out by people 65 and over.

ALSO: what does this mean?
-Removal of the earnings limitation of people 65 and over in order that they may earn any amount of additional income.

Answer: 1) all that you've paid out for medical expenses is deductible (exempt from the tax in question (Federal, maybe). The states would have to enact their own rules, so you can't say exempt from all taxes.

2) To qualify for Medicaid (or Medicare, I forget which), a senior citizen has to make under a certain amount of money (the earnings limit). The new rule would wipe that limit away.

Question: Why should ALL tobacco NOT be banned?

I am in a debate class and I am on the side of which I have to defend why tobacco should not be banned. Can you please give me ideas on why it shouldn't be banned other then, taxes,freedom of expression, and plain and simple its bad for you?

You could also bring up the fact that alcohol, which is a drug, is not banned. So, why should nicotine, the drug in tobacco, be banned. Also, advertising cigarettes is illegal, so its no longer glorified on TV, and no one is forced to smoke, its a freedom. There are so many bad things on the market today (artificial food dyes, trans fat) that many people consume without even knowing, so the FDA would be much better off putting resources to making these banned than tobacco, a plant that brings much funds to the government.

The society I want to live in provides a good public education, good military defense, good roads and other public services. These things don't come cheap. Question: If the Federal Income Tax is illegal, why can't we all just break the law too?

I don't understand how this has been around since 1913 ILLEGALLY
& it STILL hasn't been changed.

Answer: The Federal Income Tax was created by the 16th Amendment to the Constitution. The Constitution is the law of the land. Hence, the income tax is legal. Nothing in the US Constitution is illegal.
