Question: What are the starting numbers for tax ids (EIN) . Sometimes there are too many #'s on the W-9 forms I get in.

Do you always leave off the "1" in a number like this: 1742xxxx00-0. This is what a customer gave me. Are these correct starting numbers 75-, 32- 74-, 20-? Any and all correct number sequences would be greatly appreciated.

Answer: All taxpayer ID numbers -- SSN, EIN, ITIN, etc. -- are 9 digits long. They can begin with any digit, though 8 and 9 are unusual. If someone gives you a number with anything but 9 digits, ask for a correction.

You can verify SSNs through the SS website and EIN & ITIN through the IRS. In this day of ID theft, it would be wise to verify everything.
