Are Tax Returns Public Record

Question: Lookup tax return information for a particular public company? ?
I vaguely remember doing this as an assignment in Accounting class. There are a couple of companies I want to get the tax return information on (how much revenue the company made, expenses, etc.)
Is this only available for publicly traded companies? Or is this public record for any registered business? Where can I find this info?

Answer: Publicly trade companies with 300 or more stockholders have to file statements with the SEC. You can go on to Yahoo Finance and look them up then down load them from Edgar. Companies with fewer than 300 stockholders don't have to provide this information but reputable ones do. I have stock in a company with 124 registered stockholders and it publishes quarterly and annual financial statements that can be accessed from pinksheets.com
