How To Do Tax Returns Online

How To Do Tax Returns Online

Question: Is there a way to find your old tax returns online?

I need them and didn't save them . Can I find them online? Where? Thanks.

Answer: If you applied using one of the online services (TaxAct, TurboTax, etc.) you can just log in to your account and print out a new copy.

If you used a paid preparer, you can call them and they'll give you another copy of your return. They may charge a fee for this service.

If you did your taxes yourself and mailed your only copy to the IRS, you can contact them and get either an official copy (costs money) or a transcript (free). Here's details:

Is My State Refund Taxable

Question: Why is my refund greater than my withheld taxes (regarding foreign income)?

I'm using TurboTax online to do my taxes. After reporting my foreign income (no Foreign Earned Income Exemption), my refund shot up to $350. I only had $50 withheld from my domestic earnings this year, so I don't understand how I can be getting $300 more than I withheld in refund. Is there a mistake, or does this have to do with the credit for paying foreign taxes? If it's the latter, why didn't I have to report how much of my foreign income was taxable or how much I paid in foreign taxes?

The numbers are relatively small, since I worked part-time for a limited period of time in the States, and now I'm living in China, where the average income and cost of living are both way less than America, so I don't make a full American salary here. However, if you count my Chinese income, I'm still over the standard deduction + student loans deduction. I don't know if that matters, but I'm including it in case it does.

Answer: The rebate recovery credit is $300 if you didn't already get the money based on your 2007 tax return.

Obama: Here's $5,000. Go hire someone.

When President Obama called last month for a new tax break to spur job creation, critics blasted him for offering no specifics. On Friday, Obama plans to fill in the details: He wants to give businesses a $5,000 tax credit for each net new employee they hire this year.

Answer: Look at last year's return.

If you were in the 10% marginal tax bracket for your last return, send in approx. $1,400 on a form 1040-ES.

If you were in the 15%, send in $2100

If you were in the 28%, well, you get the idea.
