What is the deadline date for tax extensions?

Usually the due date for filing tax returns for most people is April 15 of the calendar year following the tax year.

For example, the deadline for filing the 2007 tax return is April 15 of the year 2008.

However, if a taxpayer files for a tax extension by filing the tax form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Tax Return, then he or she will have an automatic 6 month period to file his or her tax return.

The deadline for filing the tax extension form 4868 is April 15. If the IRS does not receive the 4868 form by the due date of the tax return, then penalties and interests are assessed.

Once the form 4868 is filed, the taxpayer has until October 15 to file his or her tax return. This is the automatic 6 month tax extension period.

However, if the taxpayer is outside the US, exception rules apply.
